Are winter tires right for you?
As a general rule, you should use winter tires if the average winter temperature where you live is 45f or below.
In Wallingford, the average temperature ranges from 26F– 46F from December to March, for the whole of Connecticut, temperature averages are similar. There is certainly enough snowfall and ice to warrant the use of snow tires too.
Do I need a full set?
You should always replace all 4 of your vehicle’s tires with winter tires, not simply the front or rear two. This can create conflicting driving conditions between the front and back, increasing the chances of skidding.
Should I use studded tires?
Studded tires are good if you experience severe ice conditions and hard, compact snow. They are proven to offer superior grip to non-studded tires in winter driving conditions.
All of the neighboring states around CT permit metal and rubber studs, however most are with restrictions, listed below:
- CT – Permitted November 15 – April 30
- MA – Permitted November 2 – April 30
- RI – Rubber studs permitted November 15 – April 1 (only if not projected more than 1/16 inch)
- VT – Permitted
- NH – Permitted
- NY – Permitted October 15 – May 1
- NJ- Permitted November 15 – April 1
- PA – Permitted November 1 – April 15

Winter tires or all season tires?
Are all season tires appropriate for snow and ice? The name would suggest so, however all season tires are generally designed for light snow. The tread compound in all season tires can also harden in cold weather, when this happens you have reduced traction. Winter tires however are specifically designed to combat this, improving grip, braking and overall safety in snow and ice.
Remember to switch to regular, summer or all-season tires in the spring. Winter tires are often not permitted past April or May and can also wear prematurely in warmer weather.
